Joy Munt is a visual artist working and living in Vancouver BC.  She attended the University of Victoria where she received a BFA in Visual arts with a double major in Sociology and a minor in film studies.  While at Uvic she did her directed studies in photography and video installation.  Fred Douglas was her main advisor and his process and way of thinking still affects her art to this day.  Since graduation Joy has worked in the Vancouver film industry.  Joy made the change in her art practice from video to painting around 2004 and over a number of years worked hard at finding her vision in this medium.  Early on she became interested in the idea of landscape.  Joy has lived in four different cities in three provinces of this fabulous country.  Whether it is a city on the ocean, a prairie town or a large metropolis Joy finds beauty and excitement in them all.

ARTSTAR PROPS
DESCRIPTION:
This recent work of art “Images of the Floating world” is loosely inspired by Ukiyo-e.  In a sense, this series, “is an abstracted interpretation of Ukiyo-e .  I have taken the traditional, inspirational landscapes as my jumping point and transposed them in to my own understanding of the landscape that surrounds me.

TASTER 1997
GROUP SHOW
DESCRIPTION:
VIDEO INSTALLATION
I have put together narrative assemblages from a file of slides.  Some of these slides I have found and some I have created.  I sort through these slides till a grouping suggests itself.  From there the process consists of copying slides (or parts of them), photographing new ones and organizing them in to sequence. To complete the process I add a sound track.  The result is a frail narrative.  I try to be drawn along by the unofficial history that comes from work life and tourist places.  My work is the celebration of the frailties and fancies of life as suggested through these images.
